Wikis

I was reading the chapter in Richardson about Wiki's and like the other chapters, started thinking about my own class. I would really like to try creating a wiki like our ITSopedia. Each chapter, we could create a portion of the wiki to summarize what we have learned. I find that when it comes time for the test, students always want to know what is going to be on it. With a wiki, they could go back and look at everything we have collectively learned and use it to study. Unlike a blog that requires consistent communication, I don't think that students would have to be as diligent about checking the wiki (and therefore the no computer issue would not be such a problem). Everyone could contribute once or twice throughout a chapter (topic, example problem, helpful steps) and then everyone could review it near the end.

  1. So, I create these test topics every chapter, most of the time they just stick them in their notebook. If I create a wiki for each chapter and as a skeleton put the test topics, it will serve as a jumping point for their own posts. So simple, but for whatever reason, reading your post showed me how obvious it was!

  2. That last comment, by Jennifer, really wasn't my 10-year old. I just forgot to make sure I was logged in. Sorry!

  3. I like the idea of creating a portion of the wiki for each chapter. I would probably do it by unit, since we don't always follow the book. Would you review together as a class?

  4. I usually review before a test in class, so I don't think that will change. This would be in addition. I would make sure that the wiki was on track, but it would be up to them to use it as a resource to study.
