Wikis
I was reading the chapter in Richardson about Wiki's and like the other chapters, started thinking about my own class. I would really like to try creating a wiki like our ITSopedia. Each chapter, we could create a portion of the wiki to summarize what we have learned. I find that when it comes time for the test, students always want to know what is going to be on it. With a wiki, they could go back and look at everything we have collectively learned and use it to study. Unlike a blog that requires consistent communication, I don't think that students would have to be as diligent about checking the wiki (and therefore the no computer issue would not be such a problem). Everyone could contribute once or twice throughout a chapter (topic, example problem, helpful steps) and then everyone could review it near the end.

So, I create these test topics every chapter, most of the time they just stick them in their notebook. If I create a wiki for each chapter and as a skeleton put the test topics, it will serve as a jumping point for their own posts. So simple, but for whatever reason, reading your post showed me how obvious it was!
ReplyDeleteThat last comment, by Jennifer, really wasn't my 10-year old. I just forgot to make sure I was logged in. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of creating a portion of the wiki for each chapter. I would probably do it by unit, since we don't always follow the book. Would you review together as a class?
ReplyDeleteI usually review before a test in class, so I don't think that will change. This would be in addition. I would make sure that the wiki was on track, but it would be up to them to use it as a resource to study.
